Kennesaw, GA - Optical reference point

When the tunnel under the railroad tracks in Kennesaw was being constructed, they used optical reference points to detect any movement or failure of the ground that supports the tracks. The object in the picture is one of the reference elevation points used. It has been left in place on the depot for future reference of any settlement of the tunnel or the tracks.
