First President of Southern Railroad, Samuel Spencer. He died in a train accident in 1906. Employees of the railroad raised money for the statue. Inscription on the pedestal: Samuel Spencer 1847-1906
In the lobby of the building is the 1928 replica of the steam locomotive "Best Friend of Charleston". The original, built in 1830 is considered the first locomotive built entirely in the United States.
